Workplace Wellbeing Is No Longer An Afterthought

How can a company with well-established trust and a positive culture maintain that during times of upheaval and change? How can a leader turn the ship around when ? How can a company maintain it’s core values as it grows?

The fact is, having a positive culture and a focus on people’s wellbeing is an essential characteristic of a healthy business in 2025.

For too long, businesses have measured success solely by profit margins and productivity. But as we move into 2025, smart leaders recognise that wellbeing isn’t just a perk - it’s a fundamental driver of performance. Workplace wellbeing is no longer a token initiative.

Puppies and popcorn…fruit bowls and yoga… these are all nice things to have at work. But we must address the deeper issues that cause employees to disengage, quiet-quit, or burn out to effect real change. Companies that foster a positive workplace culture see higher productivity, better retention, and ultimately, stronger profits.

Wellbeing and Productivity

The 2023 Gallup State of the Global Workplace Report found that 85% of quiet-quitters cited engagement, pay, and wellbeing as the top issues driving their disengagement.

Disengaged employees aren’t just unhappy - they’re less productive, more stressed, and more likely to leave. Poor management practices can exacerbate these issues. According to Gallup’s 2024 State of the Global Workplace report, employees working under bad management are 60% more likely to experience stress than those in supportive environments. This isn’t just bad for individuals - it’s bad for business.

Workplace Wellbeing in the Age of Burnout, Compliance, and Quiet-Quitting

14 February at 12pm AEST (Qld time)

Culture Over Strategy

Focusing on strategy over culture is like giving a marathon runner a map but no fuel to finish the race.

Businesses need a clear roadmap, but unless they have a strong workplace culture, even the best strategies will fall short.

A positive culture includes:
* Trust and psychological safety
* Strength-based leadership development
* Flexible work options
* Diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging (DEIB) initiatives
* Support for mental, physical, and financial wellbeing

Companies with strong workplace cultures see higher average annual returns (Harvard Professional and Executive Development, 2024).

Simply put: culture eats strategy for breakfast—and profits for lunch.

Compliance Isn’t Optional

New psychosocial legislation underscores the importance of wellbeing as a fiduciary responsibility. Leaders who neglect workplace wellbeing not only risk poor performance but also gain potential legal liabilities. Issues like discrimination, unconscious bias, bullying, and poor management practices aren’t just HR concerns, they can become serious compliance risks.

Connection is Key

Workplace loneliness and isolation are major barriers to wellbeing. Research from Santander UK found that only 21% of women feel comfortable reaching out for mentorship, despite 76% agreeing that strong workplace relationships enhance career growth. Building relationships, fostering engagement, and encouraging meaningful work are essential. Employees who feel valued and connected are more likely to stay and contribute at their highest potential.
