It is important to remember that the choices we make, whether they be our thoughts, our intentions, or our actions have a profound impact on the way we feel. A lot of what we can get out of each day depends on the small decisions, whether we are choosing to limit ourselves, or reach for passion and vitality.
Most of the time, we are wired to go for the easy option, but this is not necessarily the best option.
Let’s say you have a bad day at work. When you get home and you have an hour to spare, you have some choices available. You could put on your running gear and go out for a run, take a stroll in a park, or sit and practice a guided meditation. Conversely, you could, make it wine o’clock, grab a tub of ice-cream and watch Netflix (nothing wrong with Netflix, all in moderation!).
The first set of options tend to leave you feeling better than when you started. Exercise helps to release endorphins and dopamine, meditation can leave you feeling relaxed, and getting outside can give you a sense of distance and perspective, as well as fresh air.
The second set of options, well. you know how they’re going to make you feel. Unhealthy, tired, sluggish, and possibly even grumpy.
Now, we are wired to go for the easy option. The instant gratification and numbing effects of alcohol, binge-watching, and sugar. You are not alone in being driven to go for something like this. But, the good news is, with practice, you can begin choosing Option A more often. It might not happen overnight, but it will happen! One trick is to delay the gratification just a little bit.
For example, if you have that hour free and you feel like binge-eating and binge-watching, perhaps you can make an agreement with yourself. You can partake in the ‘good stuff’, but only after a 15-10 minute walk around the block. Make it easy and doable. Set the bar really low and you’ll find it is easy to jump over and then get on with diving into the easy option.
These are just a few ways you can change the way you look at your life. So what can you do today?
